Tour Overview

Marangu Route is also known as the “Coca Cola route”. This is one of the most popular routes leading to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This route offering accommodation in huts so you can sleep in beds and mattresses. Acclimatisation is the key of reaching to the top so we strongly recommend to choose the six days route with acclimatisation to increase your chance to reach to the summit successfully. On the third day is the acclimatisation day. You will go to Mawenzi Saddle and come back Horombo Hut. This day will help you to acclimatise. Mountain climbing in Tanzania is a once in a lifetime experience. 

Full Itinerary

Walking distance: approximately 12 km
Hiking time: 4-5 hours
Altitudes: Marangu Gate 1,980 m – Mandara Hut 2,700 m
Vegetation zone: Rain forest, low alpine zone

After breakfast at your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, you will be collected by your head guide and driven to Kilimanjaro National Park gate in Marangu for registration and to begin the climb. You will walk through lush rain forest, keep a look out for colobus monkeys as you make your way to Mandara hut. A lunch box will be provided. Remember to take a photo at the Park gate for a great memory of the start of the adventure! Dinner and over night at Mandara Hut.

Altitudes: Mandara Hut 2,700 m – Horonbo Hut 3,720 m
Vegetation: Moorland

After breakfast you will start hike and leave the glades of forest and follow an ascending path of the moorlands to Horombo Hut. Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.

Altitudes: Horonbo Hut 3,720 m – Mawenzi Saddle 4,600 m- Horonbo Hut 3,720 m
Vegetation: Alpine desert

This acclimatisation day is optional but we recommend you to add this optional day to increase your chances to reach the peak. You will walk around Mawenzi saddle 4600m and back to the Horombo hut for a hot lunch. You will have dinner and stay overnight at Horombo.

Altitudes: Horombo Hut 3,720 m – Kibo Hut 4,700 m
Vegetation: Alpine desert

After breakfast you will walk on the saddle between Kibo and Mawenze peaks to reach Kibo Hut. Early dinner and short sleep at Kibo Hut.

Walking distance: approximately 6 km ascent and 21 km descent
Hiking time: 8 hours to Ufuru Peak and 6 hours to Horombo Hut
Altitudes: Kibo Hut 4,700 m – Ufuru Peak 5,895 m – Horombo Hut 3,720 m
Vegetation: Rocky, ice-capped summit, alpine desert

In the early morning at around 1:00 a.m. you will be woken for a hot drink and snack before you begin the climb to the summit. Pass Gilman’s Point at 5685m where you will take a short rest before proceeding to Uhuru (Swahili for “freedom”) Peak, the highest point in Africa. After taking some victory photos you descend down to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight.

The final day is spent descending down to the park gate. At the gate you will sign out of the Park and then be transferred to your hotel.
